Nicole Richie: Style Guru

Last week was Nicole Richie's birthday (would have been cool if I had gotten this up then, but alas, life) and it reminded me how much I used to be obsessed with Nicole's style. Not that I don't love it now, but her looks that year were awesome. She set off so many trends.

It was around 2006 that Nicole went from Paris Hilton's trashy sidekick on The Simple Life to paparazzi star and fashion genius. I mean Nicole was truly at the forefront of the skinny jeans/ballet flats/giant bag combo (however she was also at the forefront of the disgustingly skinny fad but we'll overlook that for now.)

I mean technically I suppose we should give Rachel Zoe the credit as she gave Nicole the magical movie makeover we all dream of having (plus Nicole lost about a gazillion pounds which didn't hurt.) But it was Nicole that rocked it and I believe made everyone buy skinny jeans. I may even give credit to Nicole for sunglasses (ugh but Paris was actually a big part of that.)

Plus she is the only person who doesn't look ridiculous while wearing this:

Here are some of my favorite Nicole looks:

Love this dress!

She has a real rocker chic look going on and I love it.

So we got skinny jeans, ballet flats, giant sunglasses and then of course the head scarf and skull scarf. I mean, hey, if you want to dress like Captain Hook, then you dress like Captain Hook.

And then there were those Balenciaga bags.
Because sometimes you just need two

That one is bigger than her!

I definitely tried to impersonate these looks (on the way cheaper cheaper side.) I think I did so somewhat successfully but no one looked as good as Nicole.

Also, I love that this is what she wears to the gym.

Oh Emmy dresses!!

Another Emmy Awards have gone by. The show was pretty ehh despite it being a great year for television. But it was a great year for fashion!! Here are some of my favorite dresses of the night and some of my not-so-favorite dresses.

Kat Dennings
The 2 Broke Girls actress looked stunning in her J.Mendel dress. It was seriously the best she has ever looked in my opinion.
Amy Poehler
Way to rock the "I just got divorced and I'm hotter than ever look even though I was married to the coolest guy ever and most of America is deeply saddened" look. Stella McCartney helped with this.
Ginnifer Goodwin
Ginnifer Goodwin always looks amazing at the Emmys. She takes risks and they work. This Monique Lhullier proves this.

Julie Bowen
Another Monqiue Lhullier. I love the color of this dress more than anything. I also love Julie's earrings.

Kerry Washington

Sequins can be overwhelming but this Vivienne Westwood  is amazing.

Emily VanCamp in J. Mendel

She looks gorgeous and the jewelry is amazing.

Julianne Moore
I do not recommend wearing this Christian Dior dress unless you are Julianne Moore. Most people would look like a jar of mustard if they tried this but she looks perfect.

And the questionable....

Zooey Deschanel
I don't know why she also insists on rocking the princess look. The bodice on this dress is gorgeous but the skirt is something Suri Cruise would pick. I mean she has really good taste, but still.
Ehh. I mean she never looks bad but she is kinda half-assing it.

Leslie Mann in Naeem Khan
Okay so I like love/hate this dress. It has this like awesome old lady vibe. I think it would be better at a cocktail party at Lilly Pulitzer's house instead of the Emmys, though.
She looks like one of the XMen

Ehh

This is fine just boring

She looks gorgeous I just find this dress to be boring for such a young woman. Have some fun Alison!
